Future Proofing Foundations for Reuse

This contractor is implementing long-term structural and geotechnical monitoring to enhance the value of the constructed piles.

Fibre optics have been installed in piles and columns over a land and marine environment and soil sensors grouted in beneath the concrete basement slab and pile caps to measure ground bearing pressures.

This use of the technology has not been used before to actively monitor the loads, settlement and behaviour of a building during construction and for years to follow.

This will provide valuable lessons learnt to all future projects. Having raw data to support sustainable initiatives for potential foundation reuse in the future as the industry is turns to re-purposing existing buildings. The findings will also aid performance-based design, having accurate data could potentially reduce factors of safety, in turn reducing the amount of concrete and steel required.
