Girls’ horizons broadened through female-only STEM Campaign

As part of Heron Bros project delivery for East Renfrewshire Council and the construction of Faith Schools Joint Campus, Crookfur PS & Nursery and Arthurlie Family Centre, they implemented the “Girls’ Horizons” Initiative to encourage females into STEM careers.

In partnership with East Renfrewshire Council, BDP Architects and local schools a female-only careers event was held. More than 80 pupils took part in an event from seven local schools with the aim of increasing the number of young women pursuing a career in construction, property, technology or engineering.

At the event, pupils got the opportunity to engage with female STEM professionals including Quantity Surveyors, Civil Engineers and Architects. The students tried out VR googles and were tasked with the STEM-related challenge of constructing a tower using straws that would be able to support a golf ball.

The event proved successful in broadening the girls’ horizons with 18 of the girls expressing an interest in architecture and a site visit.

Heron Bros was delighted to offer a site visit as well as advice and expertise to inspire young ladies into a career within the STEM industry.

To demonstrate key architectural stages in construction, the female students received visits to two of Heron Bros’ projects at various stages in construction.
