Green Hard Hat Challenge

We have recently issued new improved protection hard hats to all employees.

With an abundance of old style hard hats, we collected these from our staff and looked for new ways of using these to promote the image and appearance of construction.

We developed this into the ‘Green Hard Hat Challenge’ with a school local to our project work. Our STEM Ambassadors developed an engagement programme around the old style hard hats. This started with a presentation and an interactive discussion about the business and civil engineering.

We talked about how our work impacts on the environment, and encouraged the pupils to create their own environment pledge for the summer.

We then moved the activity into the outdoor classroom and had the children transform the old style hard hats into beautiful hanging baskets.

We took this opportunity to further discuss the health and safety elements of our roles, using the hard hats as a prompt, explaining why we had changed from the old style hard hat to the new to improve safety of our workforce.

We had first and second place prizes and the winners were chosen by the teacher.

We received some amazing comments from the teachers and parents and the work we have done in this school clearly showed through their individual environment pledges, and beautifully designed hanging baskets.
