Ground Stabilisation Methods

The ground conditions at this project are highly complex due to the local geological composition. Thus, traditional ground stabilisation methods could not be conducted onsite. The project team had to collaborate to challenge such methods in order to deliver the methods successfully, sustainably and without compromising viability. Rather than using the traditional auger bore method which is expensive, in terms of cost and quantity of high-carbon cement used, they decided upon an excavation method.

The project team needed to assess the ground conditions and analyse potential methods of stabilisation to assess their viability before coming up with their own solution to the problem. This forward thinking and cutting-edge approach allowed the team to challenge engineering designs and boundaries to reduce materials and allowed them to reduce the embodied carbon of their operations.

This alternative method saved approximately 1000T of cement, approximately £1 million on the cost of the auger and approximately 950T of CO2. These results demonstrate the team’s commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of project planning and execution.
