This logistically challenging, inner-city site, in the Knowledge Quarter of Kings Cross, London, presented a number of challenges, including demolition of the existing internal structure whilst supporting adjacent properties and retaining most of the original facades.
Outstanding health and safety performance is about ensuring our commitment to ensure ‘everyone returns home safely everyday’ is achieved, supporting our safety mission of Never Harm. This project defines our mission through being proactive with early interventions and demonstrating strong safety leadership which achieved zero reported or lost time incidents.
Health and safety was embedded throughout site team and wider management to lead a culture that ensured that all of our people could contribute to a safer work environment through their mature safety behaviours.
Through our Never Harm value, our site team avoided incidents through the identification of near misses and high potential incidents early and acting upon them. With every employee being proactive in dealing with smaller issues together, we eliminated serious incidents and achieved Never Harm for the lifespan of the build.
Finally, this particular project showed a great interest in the battle against mental health problems within our industry. The project team focused on mental wellbeing throughout the project through briefings, informal gatherings and stand down events. Our employee assistance programme, run by Carefirst, offers confidential help, advice and counselling and was available 24/7 to assist our staff and operatives on this and all our other projects.
