Helpful Hints for the Code of Considerate Practice – Environment

Being registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) means we need to demonstrate our commitment to the Code.

The CCS Code of Considerate Practice is effectively communicated to our workforce through a sheet of helpful hints covering all five sections of the code.

Through reading this document our workforce understands the importance of the Code and how it should be applied.

Here are some of the helpful hints we suggest to comply with the ‘Protect the Environment’ section of the code:

  • Install a simple rain water harvesting system to cabins and use the water generated within the construction of the building;
  • Use simple computer-made signs (turn off lights when not in use) and display next to all light switches;
  • Take a monthly meter reading of the electricity, gas and water services. Display this on the wall to monitor energy usage;
  • Re-use timber from other sites, e.g. plywood for hoardings;
  • Ensure that spill kits and all fuel is stored correctly and in bunded tanks;
  • Always try to source materials locally to reduce the carbon footprint;
  • Aim to source 25% local labour;
  • Ensure the Site Waste Management Plan and any recycling reports are regularly updated and available.
