The importance of protecting birds of prey

With public concern of the decreasing population of birds of prey within the Derbyshire area, it was decided that a push for a public environmental awareness regarding the topic was needed.

The Owl Experience was contacted and carried out an environmental talk to the students of Aldercar Community College.

This talk highlighted the importance of the birds within the local area and the strain that the Birds of Prey are currently under in the current area.

The talk gave students the opportunity to see Birds of Prey up close and was informed of the bird breeding, hunting and living habits. This coincides with Henry Brother’s promise to improve the local biodiversity along with Derbyshire’s LBAP- which highlights the importance of protecting Birds of Prey.

Not only was a talk carried out, Henry Brothers donated a cedar bird box and bird camera that is to be erected within the school garden.

A bird table and pairs of binoculars were donated to the biodiversity club within the school to help increase and promote the monitoring of the local biodiversity, which will be erected within the garden of the new school grounds.

All these arrangements are to accommodate the school on achieving their eco-schools status. Once the new school is opened the school will register with Eco-schools, by having these initiatives behind them it’s a great start to allow the school to excel in preserving the local environment.
