Hydrogen Powered Generator

Due to a lack of mains connection, the site team needed to find a way to sustainably power the site. They received funding for a one-year trial of 500kva of hydrogen power at the Victoria Road Crossover Box, including emissions testing study by the Imperial College of London.

The hydrogen used in the units are created from Wind and Solar Farm energy converted into hydrogen. The units provide 100% renewable and emission free power in the form of a hydrogen fuel cell.

The benefits of this were:

  • 100% emission free hydrogen – 505 tonnes C02e avoided. The equivalent amount of C02 generated from powering 187 homes for a year.
  • Ability to install an Electric Vehicle charging point or become a Hydrogen refuelling station.
  • Quieter than standard Diesel Genset.
  • Provides combined heat and power (via an exchanger).
  • Air quality benefits to workforce and local community (no harmful pollutants). Only emission is water which is clean and safe to drink.
