Identifying Plant and Wildlife Species

The current ecological challenges that face the operatives working on the route are hugely varied and can be hard to know what needs to be done for each particular species.

At different areas along the route there are known protected species/invasive plants, but it can be hard to identify them without an ecologist being present.

The legal requirements also vary for each species, and some operatives may be unaware of their duties.

A ‘Lineside Ecology’ guide was developed which can be used on track to help operatives quickly identify species, and ensure that they follow the correct procedures in order to prevent any damage or illegal activities.

The leaflets are folded down to a bank card size, which enables them to fit easily in their PPE and pockets. When they are unfolded they show a double sided document, which is slightly longer than A3.

This includes clear pictures of particular protected species and invasive plants, as well as the actions that must be undertaken upon discovery.
