Taylor Woodrow are currently constructing a new motorway interchange on the M20 near Ashford, Kent for our client, Highways England. Taylor Woodrow and Highways England are continually striving to deliver a better service to their customers, and one of our initiatives is to reduce delays through Highways England roadworks.
Following extensive monitoring and data collection by Taylor Woodrow around J10 of the M20, and the subsequent risk assessments and contingencies put in place, a 60mph speed restriction trial was installed on the Coastbound carriageway. This was an uplift to the standard 50mph temporary speed restriction usually adopted on high speed motorway. Further data was collected under the new speed limit to assess any impact and possible issues.
It was found that more drivers stayed within the new speed limit than they did at 50mph and HGV drivers did not tail gate other drivers. This increased the gap between vehicles and allowed for smoother traffic flows and late severe breaking.
Though the site is relatively short in length and only a small amount of time is gained travelling through the site, traffic was proven to move better through the scheme. Following the successful trial, the speed restriction was raised from 50 to 60mph on the London-bound carriageway.
