Improving Public Road Safety

The public’s road safety is being improved with the electronic GPS mapping of all salt/ grit bins in Luton by identifying their location, condition and content. This provides live, up-to-date information for the public and allows, when necessary, corrective action to be taken before/during hazardous winter weather.

The contracts operatives use a tablet onsite to locate the bin using GPS. Once the bin has been located on the tablet, the user will update the record with any up-to-date information, for example: salt/grit levels, bin condition (cracked, missing lid), etc. The information is instant, so it shows up straight away on the desktop portal enabling staff in the office to respond as appropriate. The operatives onsite will also upload a photo if the bins are defective.

The map view on the desktop is very user friendly and is good at a glance view. The bins show as a dot on the map and if the dot is green, this means it is full and without problems; if it’s red, then there is an issue. Map16 also allows searching by street name, to find a bin.

Once all data has been recorded, there is the facility to run reports on the data collected. For example, the amount of bins that were identified as defective. This information informs staff of the number that need to be ordered and replaced.
