Improving Safe Behaviours

After conducting some analysis into people’s ‘risk perception’ (using photos of safe and unsafe site conditions), it was discovered that about 5% of people had noticeably different opinions about risk than their peers.

To help those people make good decisions, especially when their supervisor, foreman, manager or safety advisor wasn’t around, Triple ICE Coach was used which basically uses three question themes: ICECREAM, ICEBREAKER and ICEBERG to get a team thinking for themselves, rather than being too dependent on always being ‘told’ what to do.

It’s free to use app that was tested on a  smaller repair project in South Africa and the initial feedback has been very positive. The main difference being that the team is analysing and discussing things themselves. It has meant their views, and therefore their risk perception, are continually being developed.

The coaching-style dialogue has opened people up, with quieter embers of the team now bringing ideas and the collective confidence of the team has progressed more rapidly than before.
