Inspiring Careers in Construction

Laing O’Rourke, a local organisation called Creative Wick and Gainsborough School collaborated on the creation of a bespoke series of workshops that used art and design to inspire pupils to consider the wide variety of career options offered by the construction industry.

Each workshop took on a theme, with pupils first learning about the role of art and design in construction, as well as the purpose and roles of different buildings and how they could influence their design.

They created models of their buildings which were displayed in an exhibition. In the exhibition, more than 150 pupils, teachers and parents were given the opportunity to experience virtual reality technology and gain an understanding of how it is being integrated into the construction process using visual simulators (oculus rift headsets) and how it is possible to create 3D models digitally.

Laing O’Rourke is not only proud to have supported this initiative through the fund ‘Transforming the Future’ but also to have the opportunity to promote the integration of different stakeholders (such as local designers, local artists, architects, the London Legacy Development Corporation, Here East, Pen Pushers) and to have hopefully inspired children to consider the different careers available in construction.
