Highway works are labour intensive and involve installing multiple utilities. This can cause disruption and prolong the project process.
See the examples below for how the Manchester Metrolink Trafford Park Line site addressed this:
- The site adopted a Joint Utility Trench strategy, which involves the installation of up to 8 utilities in a single trench including Water, Gas, Electricity and Telecommunications designed and installed by a single contractor.
- The system was devised through collaboration between different utility companies.
- The Joint Utility Trench has reduced work duration on the public highway, which has minimised disruption to surrounding businesses and the public.
- The initiative has the added environmental benefit of avoiding the requirement of repeat excavations/ reinstatement of the same footways.
