While we strive to remove and reduce work at height, it is often unavoidable for lorry drivers/ operators to work at height for short periods of time.

Those operators are reliant on the assistance of someone at the depot or on-site to secure a leaning ladder to ensure the operator can ascend safely.

This is especially true of HIAB operators responsible for the loading and unloading of temporary accommodation cabins, storage units or modular building blocks.

It is sometimes necessary for those driver/ operators to gain access to the roof of cabins or units for slinging purposes.

Fall-protection equipment can be used, namely a full body safety harness and a suitable fall arrest block, utilising the crane hook as the attachment point. Ladders are used for access, but the operator is still dependant on a second person to steady the ladder.

The Wernick Group HS&E team have developed a ‘RSS Ladder Steady’ kit which can be used to secure and stabilise ladders at mid height where no-one else is available to foot the ladder – in the same way that Sky engineers secure and stabilise their ladders, prior to installing satellite dishes etc.

The kit has been rolled out to Wernick depots where haulage is supplied in-house, and drivers/ operators are fully trained in its use.
