Lead Dust Contamination

On this project they recognise that lead dust is a contaminant and a hazardous substance for the environment as well as the general public’s health, especially for young children and unborn babies. From their own experience, the risks are not so well known among the construction industry and they would like to change that.

To make their subcontractors and clients aware they have created a procedure that at the point of sale they do a lead contaminant test on older properties where lead paint might be present on items that they might need to work on. They have started using simple Instant Lead check swabs to determine if lead is present.

If lead is identified they will use a dust suppressant mesh for the outside, and solvent or caustic-based liquid stripper, using hepa filtered hoovers, masks, gloves, and protective clothing for the inside while removing carpets, curtains, or any other soft furnishings that could become contaminated.

They have also created signs to keep vulnerable people and children out of the contaminated areas.
