Leica PowerDigger 3D to avoid underground services

As a Site Manager, avoiding underground services is always at the forefront of my mind. Having the Leica PowerDigger 3D system installed on our 360-excavator helped fill me with confidence that as a team we were doing all we could to not add to the service strikes statistics.

This system allows the operator to view a 2D or 3D model of the dig he/she is looking to excavate utilising GPS to nowhere the machine bucket is in real time.

The key benefits we found were:

  • Improving site safety by having the ability to segregate the banksman and site engineer from the machine, due to the GPS giving all the required information to the operator.
  • We also eliminated the need for an operative or engineer to enter deep excavations while digging foundations thus saving money on battering and trench boxes.
  • Other benefits where the GEO-fencing/service avoidants feature. This unique benefit allows an engineer to upload all known or suspected service runs into the Leica System, this gave the site team confidence that while we were working in areas close to services the operator had full control and information at his/her fingertips with the advantage of visual/audible alarms.
  • The best thing about this system is unlike other general safety products or procedures this has a positive effect on productivity and quality, saving time and ultimately money.
