Lewisham Gateway Public Arts Strategy has been conceived to support this major regeneration development with a core objective to contribute to the renaissance of the area, working in collaboration with the design team.

The removal of the roundabout on the A20 re-established vital links from the town to the railway stations and it is enhancing experience, linkage, legibility that will sit at the heart of the strategy.

The art programme exemplifies an approach which is both supportive and embedded in the design of the public realm as it captures and reflects the unique context that is Lewisham town centre.

This is achieved by facilitating opportunities for public art which:

  • Are responsive and sensitive to the unique context of the development and Lewisham itself
  • Offer the potential for local artists to engage with communities,
  • Is of high quality and generates a sense of place for the Lewisham Gateway in conjunction with the architectural and landscape design vision
  • Is commissioned through approved and transparent procurement mechanisms
  • Create visual links between public spaces
  • Generate sense of arrival, points of departure and meeting places
  • Will aid way finding and legibility, drawing people through the streets and public spaces of the development
  • Inspires all ages; that is intriguing to residents, regular visitors and on a singular occasion
  • Contribute to the day and night time experience, to respond to the environmental conditions
  • Are destinations in themselves.
