Low risk movement of vehicles and plant

To ensure the safety of cyclists, pedestrians and other road users, sites should take measures to minimise the risk of vehicle or plant movement, on and around site.

Speed limits and good visibility at entrances and exits will help drivers to manage vehicles safely.

Banksmen should be available to supervise and guide the movement of vehicles and plant as appropriate, to lower the risk of road-related incidents.

Examples of how sites have managed road safety include:

  • A presence was established at known hot spots, to ensure safe passage for cyclists and to manage large vehicles entering and exiting the site;
  • Motion detectors were fitted to the rear of plant, cutting the engine if a pedestrian was detected passing the rear of the machine;
  • Areas where machines were operating were defined with crash barriers;
  • Speed limits were enforced on and around the site.
