Lytag – Lightweight Aggregate

As part of the headhouse design at the Mile End Shaft site, CSJV had to backfill the headhouse footprint to enable a final Green Roof effect.

The product that was used as the geo fill was a light weight aggregate called Lytag which is pulverised fuel ash (fly ash) produced from electricity production in coal-fired power stations.

The benefits of using this product are:

  • The fuel ash has been diverted from landfill for use on the site;
  • Lytag is approximately 50% lighter than normal aggregate and therefore  twice the volume can be transported at once which reduces vehicle movements
  • With regards to manual handling, the product is easier to move due to the lighter weight of the aggregate.
