Maintaining vehicle safety and usage using GPS monitoring

It is important to always be aware of the movement of vehicles both on and off site for both public and workforce safety.

The movement of vehicles can be a safety risk if not managed and co-ordinated properly. It is key to maintain constant communication and awareness of moving vehicles to avoid this, measures should also be taken to eliminate any cases of criminal activity or improper use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs).

Skanska UK plc implemented the use of a GSM/GPS monitoring system to manage the movement of its vehicles.

  • A proactive maintenance system using GPS allows the global and real time location retrieval of vehicles on and off site which can be viewed online;
  • Benefits include the identification of unauthorised movement of MEWPs between sites or even off site, location of machines left overnight and whether machines are being charged overnight;
  • Any unauthorised movement is also linked to an operational alarm system.
