Manhole Construction

The construction of manholes on site has always been one of the riskiest activities to complete.

Rings have to be lifted from a lorry (working at height) then lowered into a hole were an operative needs to enter to undo the chains.

After the rings are installed the concrete surround needs placing but this is awkward due to the manhole rings being open and operations can only be carried out from the outside of the excavation.

After several discussions with our ground workers we found a system that has been recently marketed to minimize these risks.

A lifter designed to pick up the rings using only the excavator (removing work at height) and a platform with built in handrails that sits on the manhole ring (creates a safe working platform).

We have trialled this on site with positive feedback from the operatives installing the manholes and will be looking at using this more frequently on future projects.
