Mental Health Awareness: State of Mind

Today at the LUHIC site in Lancaster, we had a ‘Mental Health Awareness: State of Mind’ presentation from Danny Sculthorpe (ex-Wigan Warriors and Great Britain rugby league player) and Phil Veivers (ex-St Helens rugby league player and Wigan Warriors/ Salford head coach). Since leaving rugby league, Danny Sculthorpe has become a mental health and stress speaker, and has spoken to audiences all over Europe including a talk to 3,000 psychiatrists at the Excel in London.

The presentation took place in the canteen to an audience of over 70 construction site workers and BAM office staff. It was truly a brilliant presentation, with Phil and Danny talking passionately about their own personal experiences with mental health problems, including the effects and factors as well as making the point that mental health is a very serious problem in today’s society.

This is more prevalent in the construction industry where an individual is four times more likely to take their own life than be killed in an on site accident. The presentation as a whole was warmly received by the site team who contributed well to the session via questions.
