On this project, in order to further promote workforce buy-in to positive health and safety culture on site, the health and safety team organised a subcontractor monthly safety reward scheme.
Each subcontractor agreed a contribution per month which would be used to buy a prize for the winner.
Each subcontractor that made the contribution was asked to submit the name of an operative that they believe has a good attitude towards health and safety on site. They were also asked to submit a justification with the nomination, as to why they should be entered into the draw.
The winner was then chosen out of a hat. This gave a prize fund of £720 to put towards the reward for the winner.
The health and safety team presented the winner with a certificate and spoke with the operative to find out what sort of personalised prize he would like, using the fund. The most recent winner was nominated by his supervisors for having an excellent attitude towards health and safety on site.
Instead of choosing a new phone or TV, the winner expressed his wish to gain a Level 2 NVQ in Plumbing and so the prize fund will be paid to the NVQ training provider on behalf of the winner, something that he will carry with him throughout his career.
