Notifying residents of excavation work

One of the common complaints against utility companies is that they have to excavate into recently improved surfaces. This particular project involved replacing 2km of gas pipeline along a main road, which often meant replacing connections in residents’ gardens and driveways.

See the examples below for how the site worked with their neighbours to minimise inconvenience:

  • The project team sent out 12, 9, 6 and 3 month notifications, followed by a two week notification, prior to utility connection works.
  • The notifications included an offer to carry out the connection works early, before the main gas pipeline replacement commenced.
  • This would allow people to have the utility works completed before any improvement works they had planned for their properties.
This innovation was achieved on a site with a small project value and a duration of nine weeks.
