As part of our strategy to design, construct and operate the most sustainable buildings possible, Canary Wharf Contractors use environmental assessments such as BREEAM, Code for Sustainable Homes, SKA and others as a framework for maximising the sustainability value of the building.

However, with our experience in using these methodologies we have found that they can be difficult to communicate and to action the requirements in the way that a large proportion of the construction industry operate – which is to contract trade packages of work. Although there are a number of online platforms that streamline this process between the assessor/ designer/ contractor, the lines of communication between main contractor and sub-contractor/ trade contractor are often not accounted for.

In order to be more effective in how we communicate, monitor and record progress against these methodologies for different packages of work we developed an online Project Credit Tracker using our new SharePoint based intranet platform. The tracker effectively outlines the assigned assessment criteria for each package of work.

For example, the concrete package on a BREEAM assessed building may be assigned full or partial responsibility for [Mat 03] Responsible sourcing of materials, [Mat 04] Insulation and [Wst 02] Recycled aggregates. The specific package criteria can then be outlined in more detail (e.g. [Mat 03] Responsible sourcing of materials – Concrete to be BES6001 certified).

The platform can then also be used to schedule audits with the Trade Contractors and to add attachments of evidence against each requirement to maintain an on-going record of progress against the assessment.
