Loughborough STEMLab is located in the heart of a fruit trail that allows access to a wide selection of edible fruit. The ‘Fruit Route’ on campus is around 1km long with over 54 different varieties of edible fruit.
By distributing a copy of the local Orchard Map to the site, operatives are given the chance to see what type of fruit is being grown in the surrounding area. The guide highlights what types of fruit are available in the area and what time of the year is best for certain fruits to be picked and eaten. This is a perfect way to increase the operatives’ awareness of the area and its biodiversity.
The local forage map, along with a list of recipes, has encouraged operatives to get more involved to understand the biodiversity in the local area. This initiative was a way to not only look at healthy eating, but also involved creating recipes made from local ingredients.
