Overhead power lines that cross roads present a real and present danger to our roadworkers who carry out maintenance activities day and night on the road network.
As part of a wide range of activities and tools to manage/ reduce this risk and raise awareness among our teams of designers, supervisors and road workers, we created a handy A5 sized laminated safety card.
The ‘Design, Plan, Build’ safety card acts as a reminder of the hierarchy of risk reduction when considering overhead power lines.
These safety cards have been distributed to nearly 1000 employees and sub-contractors through a series of interactive and multi-sensory training events.
The training strapline ‘Look UP, Look OUT’, logo, material and programme were all developed by a team of four of our employees, an excellent example of employee engagement, taking ownership of issues. In developing the material, the team wanted to use different forms of media to convey the message in a relevant, memorable and user-friendly way.
That is where the A5 safety card evolved as a reminder to all of the risks posed by overhead power lines and how to manage this risk. The safety card includes reference to relevant legislation, bespoke commissioned cartoons to make people stop and think in a fresh way, and reference to company standard approaches to managing the risk.
