Passive Sign Posts Reduce Risk of Serious Injury

Despite best efforts to improve road safety through engineering, education and enforcement measures, road crashes, by their random and multi-causal nature, continue to happen at an unacceptable rate. According to the IAM Motoring Trust, nearly a fifth of all those killed in the UK each year are involved in a collision with a roadside feature.

We specify the use of passively safe, crash friendly roadside signpost solutions in motorway verge areas instead of the alternative larger steel post designs with safety barrier protection in front. This reduces the length of hazard that exist for road users in the nearside verges and promotes a ‘forgiving roadside’ in terms of road furniture should a road user lose control and leave the surfaced carriageway area. This significantly reduces the risk of a more serious injury, thereby improving safety for everyone.

Our designers now specify passive posts as the primary solution on motorways and trunk roads. These products are designed to shear away or break on impact therefore allowing errant vehicles to not suffer a sudden loss of momentum or energy which can result in more serious injuries in the event of a collision.
