FLO were faced with the challenge of lifting out temporary pipework from below ground through a tight opening (which had been built up since the pipework was originally installed). The pipework sections were too long to be lifted out horizontally and lifting them at an angle presented too great a risk of slippage. Rather than cut the section up, the solution was to create a bespoke metal basket that allowed the pipework to be lifted at an angle and that could carry up to 16 sections at a time.
The basket could also fit onto the track trolleys allowing the pipework to be loaded at the point of origin within the tunnel and reducing manual handling. This allowed 4.5km worth of piping to be removed in just five days.
