Protection of Natural Habitats through Engagement with the Workforce

This project has a range of flora and fauna that must be protected during the construction works. It is not possible to barrier off all areas as this would impact on the natural movement of animals and so protection of the site habitats requires cooperation of all contractors.

They have created information cards and placed them in key locations along walkways. Each card gives a brief description of the particular animal that lives there with a summary of what they eat and what to do if they enter a live construction area. They have also created a ‘wellness walk’ where the workforce can immerse themselves in the natural environment away from construction activities.

An informed workforce are likely to feel more engaged with their environment. By sharing information about the habitats and encouraging each person’s personal involvement in protecting them, they foster a sense of ownership and collaboration. This is a proactive approach to creating a protected environment.
