Providing a safe work environment using riser ducts

A safe working environment must be provided for operatives at all times.

Safety measures should be continuously reviewed and monitored and the workforce consulted to seek improvements throughout the project.

Below is an example of how one site provided a safe work environment:

  • Riser ducts were adopted, which created and protected service riser openings, providing a safe working platform;
  • Chequer plate floors were cast in when each floor was cast; these had knock-out panels in the service riser position;
  • This safety measure ensured that riser ducts were always safe places for operatives to work, and sped up installation of services.
