QR Codes to Translate Induction Information into Five Languages

Sites should ensure that workers from all backgrounds have a sound understanding of site procedures. Translators are the most common method of achieving this, but some sites are seeking to further improve site knowledge for workers who are not comfortable with English.

See the examples below for how one site achieved this:

  • The site’s induction process is an interactive experience where inductees walk around the room looking at and discussing various information boards about key topics.
  • Keen to ensure the diverse workforce fully understand the induction, the site has ensured the boards can be translated through QR codes.
  • QR codes are positioned next to each section of text which, when scanned with a smartphone or tablet, bring up the information in the most common site languages. These languages are Urdu, Punjabi, Romanian, Lithuanian and Arabic.
  • This provides a better understanding for operatives who either do not understand English or use it as a second language.
  • The QR boards are used in addition to a translator from the person’s language group, though the online system has the benefit of removing the mistakes which can take place through verbal translation.
  • This simple solution ensures site information is always available for personnel who are not comfortable with English.
