Reclaimed Water Put to Good Use

Dust is a prevailing issue on any construction site, especially in the height of summer with warm, dry weather.

Dust not only poses a problem for those working on site but also to neighbouring properties.

The Graham Farrans Joint Venture (GFJV) team working on the A6 Randalstown – Castledawson Dualling Scheme have made it a priority to ensure appropriate methods are in place to minimise dust on the A6 site, safeguarding workers and minimising the impact on the local community.

As a sustainable solution to this pressing issue the GFJV have been extracting water from a groundwater collection sump in an on-site borrow pit. The sump water is pumped through a silt buster and discharged into an adjacent settlement pond.

By extracting the sump water potential pollution is mitigated and water usage from a mains supply is significantly reduced.

Water is then put to good use for dust suppression across the 14.7km site, significantly reducing the environmental impact of works or inhalation of small airborne particles.

Having used this process there have been considerable savings in water usage – saving on average 27,000L of water per week in dry conditions.
