Reclaiming mosslands through carbon capture project

Considerate constructors understand their impact on the environment and take effective measures to mitigate this impact and leave behind a positive legacy. Some sites look beyond their site boundary and seek to improve the environment further afield.

See the examples below for how one site addressed this:

  • The site worked with the local Wildlife Trust to restore a local Mossland site. Mossland is a priority habitat in terms of biodiversity and carbon capture. Mossland acts as a carbon ‘sink’ and when damaged emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
  • However, mosslands are in decline due to peat extraction and man made drainage, sometimes as part of construction work.
  • The site team worked with external partners to protect the mosslands. This involved driving sheet piles made from 100% recycled plastic into the site which rewets the site, restores Sphagnum Moss and other vegetation that captures carbon and creates new peat.
  • The project team has made a donation to the Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s Mosslands project which relies on charitable donations and will enable them to purchase sheet piles. This donation will balance out approximately 67 tonnes of carbon dioxide generated as part of the construction work.

This work helps restore the local mosslands and contributes to carbon offsetting initiatives which compensate for unavoidable emissions.
