Recognising Apprentices at Awards Events

As part of our Apprentice support programme we encouraged our second year Apprentices to reflect on their achievements in completing their first full year of their Apprenticeships.

This included supporting one of our Apprentices to prepare a submission for a local industry award scheme, capturing what he had learned in his first year and how he had contributed to business objectives. The paper was successful in being shortlisted for a local professional engineering institution (Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation – Yorkshire & Humber region) annual award scheme in the Apprentice of the Year category.

In celebration of this, we invited four of our Apprentices and their mentors to accompany two representatives from our senior leadership team to attend the awards ceremony at a prestige venue in Leeds. This included a dinner, awards presentation and dancing.

This helped our Apprentices feel even more valued and respected within the business, and although unsuccessful in carrying off the top award, the recognition our shortlisted Apprentice received has had a positive impact on the Apprentice programme and the wider business, encouraging our new first year Apprentices to consider potential papers in the future.
