Removing a Pipe Bridge using Air Bags

As part of the scope of works on the Ferrybridge site there are 3 pipe bridges to remove, one of the bridges, know as Stocking lane bridge, has very restricted access.

Traditional lifting methods using mobile cranes proved unachievable due to the restricted access, the team explored a variety of options including the option to jack up and float the bridge.

Partnering with a buoyancy and ballast specialist, a scheme has been developed to float the bridge on air bags, the methodology, which is currently under review by the Environment Agency, includes the installation of the lifting frame, the floating and placement of the buoyancy bags, attachment of a tug line, inflation of buoyancy bags and flotation to offloading point of the bridge which will be pulled in by an excavator.
