Sight Line for the Partially Sighted and Street Works App

Construction sites should take extra precautions to ensure that partially sighted local residents and wheelchair users are aware of the works and do not put themselves in danger.

See the examples below for how some sites have addressed this:

• Street Works Info is a system for signing and guarding street works sites that communicates extra information to pedestrians, particularly those who use a wheelchair or are blind or partially sighted as it provides navigational information.
• There is a Braille feature on the hoarding giving tactile direction signs to safely direct people around the site. There is also a QR code to access site information.
• The signs give off a signal once a mobile device goes within range of it and a message is sent to the device with an audio and large print description of nearby roadworks using the system. The description includes site configuration and length, along with how you should negotiate it and how long it will be in place.
• There is an additional app-based system which provides alerts and information about the project. This has to be configured by a member of site staff, who log into the app and register information about the site such as general layout, end date of works, type of works and notes of features that may affect disabled people.

The initiative has been used on sites of varying sizes and contract lengths, and with different user groups in mind i.e. blind people and wheelchair users.
