Sludge Removing Robot

During Gas Holder demolition works, residue needed to be removed from the floor of the tank. Previously this used to be a manual operation undertaken within a confined space. However, Northern Gas Networks worked with a tank cleaning organisation to develop a piece of kit that could move the residual material to the tank openings without manual intervention/confined space works.

This resulted in the development of the Robo-Dozer. It is small enough to fit into confined spaces and can move material across the holder floor to a point where vacuum extraction can then be used to remove it.

It is controlled from outside the holder using a remote controller which operates the hydraulic tracks and steering to ensure full 360 degree mobility. This significantly cuts the operatives’ time spent inside the holder, and hence the operational health risks associated with confined spaces is minimised.

Tests to date have been very successful.
