Smart Sponge

The Smart Sponge absorbs hydrocarbons from water and allows clean water to pass through the Smart Sponge, therefore creating clean, dischargeable water to enter the network or river.

The Smart Sponge technology is oleophilic and chemically selects all Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on contact, absorbing them within the Smart Sponge structure and solidifying turning a liquid pollution into a stable, solid waste. The Smart Sponge is hydrophobic and therefore, during the absorption process, the water passes straight through and out.

The Smart Sponge along with Naylor Environmentals’ other technologies were presented as potential future solutions for Sir Robert McAlpine to incorporate into ongoing and future projects as best management aids to deliver cleaner and greener resources as part of Sir Robert McAlpine’s commitment to reduce waste and pollution.

Smart Sponge Passive Skimmers were then installed in the road gullies at Victoria Square to reduce contamination potentially leaving the site and starts Sir Robert McAlpine’s programme of commitment.
