Spotlight on… apprenticeships follow-up article

In March 2014, the Scheme’s campaign focused on apprenticeships and looked at what the industry was doing to encourage new talent into construction.

‘Spotlight on… apprenticeships’ introduced facts regarding apprenticeships and the benefits that many employers have gained by offering this type of work placement. There are already a number of campaigns offered throughout the UK, and many opportunities within construction, but there is still much that can be done to attract new talent into the industry.

The response the Scheme received from the industry once ‘Spotlight on… apprenticeships’ launched was fantastic, with many sites and companies getting in touch with the Scheme to demonstrate what they are doing with apprentices. Many articles and case studies from the industry have been added to the campaign.

Bam shared with the Scheme a number of case studies on their apprenticeship schemes while Balfour Beatty also provided numerous profiles on their apprenticeships in a wide variety of roles. As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, George Hood, Balfour Beatty’s Managing Director Northern Scotland, swapped roles with their apprentice joiner Matthew Jolly for a day. Pochin Construction supplied case studies on four of their apprentices thriving in construction, as did Morgan Sindall who also presents awards to their highest performing apprentices.

VolkerHighways provided a case study written by their apprentice working as an engineer who was made aware of their apprenticeship scheme through the Prince’s Trust. Costain and Network Rail made the Scheme aware of their London Bridge Station Redevelopment site achieving Skills Academy status which enables local people to be trained into local jobs, helping to create a sustainable community. The project is able to train people on site and then offer work experience and placements within the industry.

A number of industry bodies specialise in apprenticeships and offer advice and guidance to both apprentices and those who are looking to offer them. The CITB provides a dedicated apprenticeship service and offers a wealth of resources to support companies during the process. Construction Youth Trust and Building Lives also feature in the Scheme’s ‘Spotlight on…’ and the Scheme has offered its support to Building Lives’ Homes Work campaign which aims to encourage more apprenticeships in the housing sector.

The Scheme would like to thank registered sites and companies for sharing their efforts in raising awareness of this important issue. Not only does offering apprenticeships inspire people to work in construction and bring many benefits to local communities, it helps to secure the industry’s future.

The Government’s Construction 2025 document looks ahead to what the UK construction industry needs to do in order to be at the forefront of global construction by 2025. One area of action focuses on the need to improve the image of the industry which affects how attractive a career in construction is to the next generation. The document highlights that a fall in apprenticeships is a threat to the growth of the industry, but through projecting a better image and attracting new talent, the industry will be able to thrive and be well-placed to make the most out of future opportunities.
