Steps to improving community relations & maintaining communications

Focusing on community relations is a vital component of any project, in order to build good relationships with the local community.

Pre-start information and constant communication channels and updates are good ways to minimise the risk of unnecessary conflict or complaints.

Examples of how sites have successfully communicated with the community include:

  • Updates and information through a local e-newsletter;
  • PR stories in the press or meetings with local MPs, to help harness and promote support;
  • Encouraged dialogue and sought feedback on performance, rather than just ‘broadcasting’ site news;
  • Clear signage, which included out of hours contact details.
