Supporting Biodiversity

Recent research shows that almost one third of the UK bee population is in decline. Our 25 bumble bee species are some of the nation’s favourite creatures and are vital for the pollination of crops, garden plants and wild flowers.

At our Pomeroy Street site in Lewisham, we are determined to do what we can to preserve the bee population.

During the recent hot weather, our site team created a much-needed water source. Bees need a dependable source of water all year round, but in the hot weather, this is crucial, particularly in an urban environment.

Our bee watering stations are set on pea shingle to give a stable footing for bees. The water, placed in coloured bowls to mimic flowers contains a small trace of chlorine. Bees are attracted to water by its scent, so this was used to initially attract the bees. Once the bees had become accustomed to the source, the chlorine was gradually omitted from the water.

As well as helping to revive tired bees, the water is collected and carried back to the hive to keep it cool. It is also essential for digestion, managing the consistency of honey and feeding larvae.

By placing the water stations close to the sites silk trees, we also hope that this will encourage pollination.
