Surface Inspect Application Improves Safety and Quality

At the Hinkley Point C site, Kier BAM JV’s surveyors have introduced cutting edge technology which allows the team to take survey scans at greater distances to the work face.

This application improves safety and vastly reduces survey time when compared with traditional methods.

The engineers use Leica’s Surface Inspect application which is loaded onto tablets out in the field. The system uses a ‘smart station’ that allows a combination of traditional survey ‘total station’ techniques and the HD scan application to produce high accuracy detailed survey information.

This way, the team are able to collect very detailed, high accuracy survey information in a short amount of time. They are also able to compare survey scans against design information out in the field, which saves time on having to return to the office for post processing of scan data. The point cloud scans are compared against the design model to ensure compliance.

The application has been deployed on a large scale at HPC. Being relatively new to the industry, Leica’s Surface Inspect application is becoming more popular on large civil engineering projects due to its flexibility and high accuracies ensuring efficiency, safety and quality.
