On this project they have been part of a trial to determine if they can swap to sustainable PPE. Five members of the team have trialled sustainable workwear in efforts to ‘green up’ the supply chain. Items of PPE that have been a part of the trial include soft shell jackets and boots made from recycled plastic bottles, glasses made from recycled nets and certified carbon neutral gloves

The trial fits with the businesses sustainability strategy and zero waste ambition for 2040. In 2020 over 2,000 hi-vis jackets were purchased, alongside 54,000 pairs of safety glasses and 226,000 pairs of gloves. The implications for waste for this extent of purchasing when acquiring regular PPE is very large, so looking into sustainable alternatives is of high importance.

The benefits of this are:

  • Potential to change the entirety of the contractor’s PPE supply to a more sustainable source
  • Supports the zero-waste ambition and waste to landfill
  • Reduces need for natural resources
  • Reduces carbon emissions from manufacturing
  • Sustainable workwear is similar price to regular PPE.
