Sustainable Site Sewage and Drainage System

The Morgan Sindall Volker Fitzpatrick JV has installed a sustainable drainage system (SuDS) to capture and treat both domestic and trade effluent from the main project offices and car park at their Barking Riverside Extension Project.

The system is installed south of the office complex and is comprised of a Kingspan BioFicient Klargester for the treatment of the domestic effluent component, and a Kingspan Klargester Interceptor for the treatment of the trade effluent component comprised of surface water runoff from the car park. Once treated the effluent is discharged to ground via three ring soakaways. The BioFicient Klargester is a system which combines settlement treatments with biological treatments and targets key components of sewage such as suspended solids, BOD and ammonia. The Kingspan Klargester Interceptor removes the free phase hydrocarbons from the surface water runoff. The discharge to ground is covered by an Environmental Permit issued by the Environment Agency (EA). MSVF liaised closely with the EA during the permit application process which included the production of a Controlled Waters Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessment, which confirmed the suitability of the treatment system and that the made ground within which the soakaways sit was a suitable receiving medium for the effluent discharge.

The installation of this sustainable drainage system to capture and treat on site the effluent from MSVF’s offices and car park negates the need for disposal and treatment off site thereby reducing the pressure on the local sewerage systems/treatment works. It is estimated that the system will capture, treat and discharge 3,232 metres cubed of effluent whilst in use on the project.
