Tackling Tuberculosis

The Royal Albert Dock project is based in Newham, London where according to new figures from a health watchdog more people catch Tuberculosis (TB) than in some sub-Saharan countries due to new tests and treatments being neglected.

Out of every 100,000 people in Newham, around 118 will contract TB – a potentially fatal, infectious disease which normally affects the lungs.

As a priority we are working with the local borough to control as much as possible the spread of this infection. Public Health England has produced figures recently which showed London’s rates had fallen but still remained high compared with the rest of the UK and other EU cities.

To contain the spread of infection Multiplex have placed “stop spitting” posters across the whole of our project in many languages as the TB bacteria is active in phlegm. We have issued tool box talks on Tuberculosis and hygiene to let all our contractors know of the disease and to educate them on how to prevent it spreading.

Our occupational nurse has also given advice on Tuberculosis via leaflets created by the British Lung Foundation, the leaflet talks about what symptoms are and how it is diagnosed as well as including helpline support and local charity advice.
