Due to the low load capacity of the concrete structure directly above the live Hammersmith and City Line tracks and platforms, the future building will need to bridge between the north and south extremities of the station (either side of the platforms).
The large loads of the future building will need to be supported by solid foundations approximately 70 metres deep into the ground, which will mean a huge piling rig weighing approximately 125,000kg will need to drill through the earth to install these foundations.
Mace as a principal contractor, as well as our design partners, realise that the existing concrete structure is too weak to support this weight, and therefore the client, the engineers and Mace collectively produced the grillage design – a huge steel structure which will act as a working platform for this rig as well as other vehicles.
This multi-million pound grillage was produced to effectively manage the risk of catastrophic incident to the public below on the train and the platforms, which is our top priority.
The initiative lies in the design and installation of the grillage to project the station below as it significantly reduces the risk to the members of the public and the city infrastructure. Provision were made in the budget and design to create a grillage of this magnitude and cost.
