Tunnelling operations require a large number of quality check sheets to be prepared and signed off daily by the engineers and inspectors for each advance. All of these check sheets and quality records must then be scanned and compiled to form part of the Inspection and Test Plan certification package for the tunnels.

In the past there could be up to 15 pages to be printed for each advance, leading to thousands of documents to be managed which often became an onerous task on site and wasteful of paper.

Dragados use a web based Tunnel Information Management System for the management of all quality and production information during tunnelling operations, an industry first.

The check sheets are signed digitally using a unique pin for the engineers and inspectors. This eases the engineers’ work load, reduces carbon footprint, allows for real-time tracking of all quality information and improves the efficiency of the certification works at the end of the tunnelling operations.

Production reports are also created to show production efficiency on site, to help identify any trends or issue areas require attention.

This enables the site management team to manage effectively, directing scarce resources to areas that can make a real difference in improvements to production, quality, and cost performance.
