Turning used PPE into Fashion Accessories!

We have partnered with Johnson Wong After:Work, an award winning company which upcycles Hi-Viz products into accessories. Their ethical mission is to take used PPE, which would otherwise be destined for landfill, and upcycle into accessories with a cool, industrial twist.

The production of these goods work with local social enterprises like HEBA Women’s Project and Making for Change, working with HMP Downview to empower women in the production process – as well as working with ex-offenders.

At Stratford Waterfront, we are thrilled to be working with this company for the following reasons:

  • Community benefits: we are supporting a local company based in Hackney Wick, and Johnson won the East Works 2019 Entrepreneur of the Year Award which recognises a local business seeking to transform its sector. The East Works programme was created by our client, LLDC, and so we demonstrate our support of their priority themes.
  • Environmental benefits: with approximately 1500 tonnes of PPE discarded every year and approximately 90% sent to landfills, we are looking to ensure that all Hi-Viz items from our project and subcontractors are recycled into usable, wearable accessories, thus avoiding a throwaway culture and unnecessary items going to landfill.
  • Promoting our industry – in re-using materials from the construction industry, we are promoting the appearance of our industry and the sustainability and community ethos that lie at our heart of what we do.
